Magna International said it will spend roughly $210 million to add a second structural battery tray line at its Saint Clair, Michigan plant. The expansion is tied to GM's long-range Ultium-based electric truck platform and will bring the site's annual capacity to roughly 350,000 trays.

The project uses a combination of aluminum extrusion, stamping, and friction stir welding and will create about 180 production jobs. Magna said the plant already supplies GM's Orion and Spring Hill EV assembly lines and that the second line is needed to support the next truck cadence out of Oshawa.

State officials said the award locks in long-term aluminum demand that had been a question mark after earlier truck volume reductions. Magna declined to disclose the total contract value.
